As the season winds on the last event of the summer to be played is the Volleyball competition. Played over three days it is competition that sets the scene before the Stanton Trophy competition relocates to the Pavilion for the Indoor Games.

Rules for the Volleyball Competition

The rules seem to be changing, and are different for 'beach', 'picnic', 'official' and others versions of the game.

To update, and as we are rather late this year, I want to introduce two new rules to speed the games up:
1. A point will be awarded at the end of the rally irrespective of which team served.
2. The serve may hit the net and, if it still goes in, be a good serve.

We will continue as we have done in previous years playing a friendly version of the game. I will mention a few of the points that have come up recently:

  • Each team will play one match to 15 points (2 clear points, or first to 2 clear points or 17) against the other league members
  • A point will be scored at the end of each rally irrespective of which team served
  • Teams of 6 people max, no minimum
  • Rotate on receipt of serve
  • Teams may consist of any male/female combination, no minimum requirement
  • No spiking or blocking the serve
  • The serve may hit the net, no second serve.
  • No time outs called by the teams.

Obvious carries, catches, throws, foot faults, or collisions with the net should be called by the umpire.

In the spirit of Stanton Trophy minor infringements of these types can be ignored as long as one team is not gaining an unfair advantage, and the decisions are consistent for the match. Each team shall be able to provide at least 1 umpire/linesman for any game they are not competing in (even after they have been knocked out please).

We want to start at 5.30 sharp due to limited light and the large number of games to be played.

Best of luck to all.
